In Monday’s (9/28) Post-Crescent (Appleton/Fox Cities, Wisconsin), Shane Nyman writes, “The 49th season for the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra is one that’s both very diverse yet very serious. ‘I wanted a dramatic balance of components,’ said Brian Groner, who has served as music director of the symphony for more than 20 years…. The season begins Oct. 3 … at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in downtown Appleton” with Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1 with soloist Austin Larson, a 24-year-old native of the Fox Valley. Marcia Henry Liebenow, concertmaster of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, will perform with the orchestra in November in Shirish Korde’s Svara-Yantra Concerto for Violin and Tabla, on a program that also includes music by Mozart and Khachaturian. “The offering from Korde is one of the reasons Groner is excited about this show…. ‘This is really a cross-cultural piece of where the Indian classical meets the Western classical music.’ ” Other repertoire includes Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with soloist Masha Lakisova, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, Surinach’s Feria Magica Overture, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with soloist Raffi Besalyan, and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. Singer/songwriter Rosanne Cash will perform with the orchestra in May.
