“The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is presenting a multimedia, three-year ‘Pelleas and Melisande’ project that will combine live music, a site-specific installation and—in the third year—the performance of a full opera,” writes Janelle Gelfand in Monday’s (9/28) Cincinnati Enquirer (Ohio). “James Darrah, a 31-year-old, Los Angeles-based designer, artist and stage director, will collaborate with the CSO in three unique interpretations of the ‘Pelleas and Melisande’ story…. The trilogy will begin with Arnold Schoenberg’s 1903 tone poem, ‘Pelleas und Melisande,’ to be heard in Music Hall on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3…. The second installation … will focus on Gabriel Fauré’s 1898 incidental music to the play, ‘Pelléas et Mélisande.’ It will include actors, with spoken texts by Maeterlinck…. The third year will culminate in a concert mounting of Claude Debussy’s 1902 opera, ‘Pelléas et Mélisande,’ in collaboration with Cincinnati Opera. It is planned for the re-opening of Music Hall following its $129 million revitalization.” Says Music Director Louis Langrée, “It’s our job to give keys to people, to connect with their own inner sensitivities. This wants to go deep into our inner secret gardens, forests and caves, and we will have the chance to do it over three years.”
