On Friday (10/2) at New York classical radio station WQXR, Mark Benedetti writes, “The members of the Signum Quartet, who begin a residency with the Princeton Symphony Orchestra in New Jersey this week, are tweeting with their instruments. The string quartet from Cologne, Germany is building a catalog of #quartweets, pieces comprised of 140 notes or less, reflecting the maximum number of characters in a Twitter message, or Tweet. Among … composers to sign onto the project are Derek Bermel, Sebastian Currier, Steven Mackey, Caroline Shaw and Sarah Kirkland Snider. The quartet is also asking composers ‘of all ages and abilities’ to submit their works…. Xandi van Dijk, the violist of the Signum Quartet … pitched the project to Marc Uys, executive director of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra, who immediately latched onto the idea of speaking to a generation that craves small, short bytes of information…. The Signum Quartet expanded the project as an outreach initiative, visiting third graders at a school in Lawrence, NJ. The students were given full creative license as they composed their own #quartweets using tablets.” At its website, the Princeton Symphony live-streamed performances of some of the quartweets on Sunday, October 4.
