“The conductor Dennis Russell Davies suffered a serious knee injury 30 minutes before a concert of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, in Linz, Austria on Sunday night,” reads an unsigned article on Wednesday (10/7) at New York classical radio station WQXR. “According to a statement by the orchestra, the 71-year-old conductor was rushed to the hospital after making an awkward turn on the podium, tearing his patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap to the shinbone. He underwent successful surgery. Davies was preparing to conduct Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, an hour-long work with grand, Wagnerian climaxes, when the injury occurred. A substitute conductor, Ingo Ingensand, stepped in with no rehearsal, and the performance took place as planned.” An October 7 press release from the Washington National Opera notes that Davies has withdrawn as conductor for Philip Glass’s new opera Appomattox at the Kennedy Center Opera House from November 14-22.
