In the October issue of Baltimore magazine, Gabriella Souza writes that as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra begins its 100th-anniversary year “it has lofty goals—attracting younger, more diverse audiences, and defining its place in the community…. This focus has been central to the symphony in recent years, from community outreach programs such as OrchKids … to a just-debuted concert series … that pairs the symphony’s musicians with up-and-coming indie-rock bands…. The BSO has ‘really been in the forefront of the evolution of American orchestras in the 21st century,’ says Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras.… ‘Marin Alsop’s … substantial devotion to music by living American composers, and presenting work that very clearly ties into issues in our lives today, really positions [the symphony] as a leader.’ … Says BSO president and CEO Paul Meecham, “We’re building a love for music with the youngest generations that will stand us in good stead in terms of audiences for future generations.” The article includes a history and timeline; coverage of the BSO’s recent free concerts to promote healing in the city after the death of Freddie Gray; and recommendations for “don’t-miss” performances of the BSO’s centennial season.
