“Ray Robinson, who developed the choral program at Palm Beach Atlantic University and led the Palm Beach Symphony for seven years, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, in Columbia, S.C.,” writes Jan Sjostrom in Friday’s (10/9) Palm Beach Daily News (Florida). “Robinson was a distinguished choral conductor and scholar, an authority on composers Felix Mendelssohn and Krzysztof Penderecki and the author of 11 books about music…. He graduated from San Jose State University [California] with a degree in music, then earned a master’s degree in viola performance and a doctoral degree in music education at Indiana University…. In 1963, he was appointed dean of the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. He also was a music critic for the Baltimore Sun. In 1969, he was elected president of Westminster Choir College, in Princeton, N.J…. He created the choral program [at Palm Beach Atlantic University] and … critiqued concerts for the Palm Beach Daily News. In 2004, he took over leadership of the Palm Beach Symphony as music director and general manager, a post he held until the end of the 2010-11 season.” Robinson is survived by his wife, Ruth Chamberlain Robinson, a daughter, and four sons.
