Principal musicians from the New York Philharmonic, MET Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and many other orchestras will perform in a benefit concert featuring Ravel’s Shéhérazade and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade Symphonic Suite Op. 35 on October 19 at Carnegie Hall. The concert had originally been planned earlier this year in January, but was postponed due to a blizzard. Former Metropolitan Opera Concertmaster Elmira Darvarova will serve as concertmaster, and mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer will sing in the Ravel. George Mathew will lead the concert, entitled The Scheherazade Initiative. The concert is presented by Music for Life International, which has presented six previous benefit concerts, including Beethoven’s Ninth for South Asia, Requiem for Darfur, and Shostakovich for the Children of Syria. Funds raised at the concert go to the U.N. Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women.
