The second year of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s free “Live from Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition” webcast series will launch on October 28 at 10:30am and 11:45am at dso.org/classroom. Hosting the program will be D.J. Oliver of Detroit Public Television’s “Detroit Performs” program, and DSO Assistant Conductor Michelle Merrill will lead the DSO in an interactive exploration of traditional classical masterpieces and contemporary and popular works. The program, “Building the Orchestra,” will explore how sounds are created by various orchestral instruments and teach students the basics of conducting as well as string players’ pizzicato technique. Teachers can register for the webcast here, where educational resources can be downloaded, including curriculum enrichment materials. Teachers and students will also have the opportunity to interact with the DSO and other viewers through social media. Building the Orchestra is designed to align with content areas set by the National Association for Music Education. The Classroom Edition series began in November 2014, with 300 Detroit public and charter schools participating. The webcast can be viewed by students and teachers worldwide.
