On October 23, the Minnesota Orchestra launched its Student Ambassador program at Orchestra Hall, with a concert featuring Juraj Valčuha leading Strauss’s Don Juan, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, and Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with soloist Jennifer Koh. Students from the University of Minnesota, outfitted in the school colors of maroon and gold, attended the concert. The Student Ambassadors program was conceived last spring as a way to better connect students from local campuses with the Minnesota Orchestra. In the project’s pilot year of 2015-16, three undergraduate music students from University of St. Thomas and eight from the University of Minnesota School of Music are serving as ambassadors, planning customized communications and promotions on campus such as student-driven social media tactics to drive attendance to campus night performances. Campus concerts include pre-concert performances by students from partner schools, themed selfie-station photo booths, and the opportunity to meet Minnesota Orchestra musicians at post-concert receptions. Three future campus nights are planned in November, February, and April.
