Two new members of the viola section have been announced by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra: SUNGHEE CHOI and YOUMING CHEN.

Sunghee Choi goes to the CSO after two years as a section violist in the Lyric Opera of Chicago and four years in Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival Orchestra. She has served as a regular substitute in the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Currently a doctoral candidate at Rutgers University in New Jersey, she holds a bachelor’s degree from Korea’s Seoul National University and a master’s degree and graduate diploma from New England Conservatory in Boston.

Youming Chen, who joins the CSO on February 1, 1016, is associate principal viola in the Kansas City Symphony. He has served as a section violist in the Grant Park Music Festival Orchestra and was principal viola in the Juilliard Orchestra. Chen holds a doctorate from the University of Missouri, a professional diploma from Mannes College the New School for Music, a master’s from the Juilliard School, and a bachelor’s from the University of Michigan.
