MATTHEW MUGMON, assistant professor of music at the University of Arizona, has been named the New York Philharmonic’s Leonard Bernstein Scholar-in-Residence for 2015-16. He received a Ph.D. in historical musicology from Harvard University in 2013, and taught at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst before joining the University of Arizona faculty in 2014. As scholar-in-residence this season Mugmon will deliver a pre-concert talk January 5 on “Sibelius in New York,” based on research in the New York Philharmonic Archives, and on April 18 will discuss Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with baritone Thomas, a featured vocalist in that work with the Philharmonic.
