“Christmas has come to Artis—Naples, in the form of two breathtaking gifts,” writes Harriet Howard Heithaus in Saturday’s (11/7) Naples Daily News (Florida). “For The Baker Museum, the enviable multimillion-dollar [art] collection of Naples residents Paul and Charlotte Corddry. For the entire institution, a $10 million endowment to pay for the music director position [of the Naples Philharmonic] in perpetuity from Sharon and Timothy Ubben. The performing and visual arts venue announced both gifts this weekend, along with the decision of its board of directors to retain Andrey Boreyko, current music director for Artis—Naples, through 2020. ‘This is a transformative time, not only for Artis—Naples, but for the community we serve,’ declared Kathleen van Bergen, its president and CEO…. Van Bergen pointed out that many of the orchestra’s first and assistant first chairs are funded annually by donors, but to have an endowed position eliminates concerns for that portion of the orchestra’s budget. Timothy Ubben … is a current board member…. The orchestra will grow by two members, to bring it to 51 tenure-track musicians … Boreyko said he also is hoping to introduce the Naples Philharmonic to new listeners in the next several years, outside of Naples and possibly outside of Florida.”
