“Troy Quinn is ready to take his turn at the podium,” writes Kelly Urban in Thursday’s (11/12) Tribune-Democrat (Johnstown, PA). On Saturday, “the Los Angeles resident will be the second guest conductor for Johnstown Symphony Orchestra’s ‘A Season of New Faces’ subscription series concerts, which will welcome six individuals looking to be named the new conductor”
to replace longtime music director Istvan Jaray. “Quinn is the music director of the Juneau (Alaska) Symphony [and] also serves as the music director of Ocean State Symphony Orchestra of Rhode Island.” The program includes Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Walton’s Suite from Henry V, Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat minor, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (“Italian”). “Quinn said this will be the first time the Johnstown symphony has played the Henry V piece…. ‘And the Mendelssohn piece is lightning fast, and we’re going to need a fire extinguisher at the end.’ Quinn said his hope for the concert is that people who have never heard classical music will be drawn to it and find an appreciation for the music.” The other five conductor candidates for the Johnston Symphony Orchestra are Scott Seaton, Joshua Zona, James Blachly, Jason Lim, and Diane Wittry.
