For the third annual Detroit Symphony Orchestra Day of Service, the DSO will close its offices on Friday afternoon, November 20, immediately following the orchestra’s 10:45 a.m. world premiere of Tod Machover’s Symphony in D at Orchestra Hall. With the day of service, the DSO thanks the Detroit community for supporting the orchestra by participating in multiple activities. This year, musicians, staff, and board of the DSO will read to and play with children at Focus: HOPE Center for Children; create arts and crafts with families at the Coalition on Temporary Shelter; do outdoor manual labor at Michigan Urban Farming Initiative; and prepare materials for children and hospital facilities to create a wall mural for display at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan. The event is part of the DSO’s Community Support Month Initiative, a fundraising initiative in November that aims to expand the orchestra’s Annual Fund donor base.
