The Recording Academy has released the nominations for its 2016 Grammy Awards, with five nominees in each of 85 award categories. American orchestras dominated the Best Orchestra Performance category, with nominations going to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for a recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 led by Manfred Honeck; to the Seattle Symphony for a disc of Dutilleux works conducted by Ludovic Morlot; to the Boston Symphony Orchestra for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 under the direction of Andris Nelsons; to the Oregon Symphony, Carlos Kalmar conducting, for a CD called “Spirit of the American Range”; and to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, led by Darrell Ang, for a recording of Symphony “Humen 1839” by Zhou Long and Chen Yi. Boston Baroque and the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra captured nominations for Best Opera Recording. In contention for Best Contemporary Classical Composition are four American composers—Andrew Norman, Stephen Paulus, Joan Tower, and Julia Wolfe—and the Irish composer Gerald Barry. Other classical categories are Best Choral Performance; Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance; Best Classical Instrumental Solo; Best Classical Solo Vocal Album; and Best Classical Compendium.
