During the month of December, the Austin Symphony in Texas is presenting “Christmas in the Community,” ten free holiday orchestra concerts throughout the city of Austin. The first concert featuring woodwinds from the orchestra took place on December 4 at Macy’s at Lakeline Mall; the final concert, at Symphony Square on December 23, will feature the Austin Symphony String Quartet and the Stardust Orchestra of Austin. The December 23 concert will also be simulcast online. Other concert locations include Montopolis Recreation Center (Dec. 5), Macy’s at Barton Creek Mall (Dec. 5 and 18), George Washington Carver Museum (Dec. 10), Gus Garcia Recreation Center (Dec. 11), Macy’s at the Domain (Dec. 11), Asian American Resource Center (Dec. 16), and the State Capitol (Dec. 22). The concerts replace the orchestra’s former Christmas Sing-Along, a one-night event performed before an audience of 3,000 people. The “Christmas in the Community” concerts were added as a way to bring music to a wider community.
