Two additions to the woodwind faculty were recently announced by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music: CAREY BELL, clarinet, and MINGJIA LIU, oboe. Both appointments take effect in the fall semester of 2016.

Carey Bell has been principal clarinet of the San Francisco Symphony since 2007. He has held principal positions with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and the Syracuse (N.Y.) Symphony Orchestra, and has served as acting principal with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and as guest principal with the Philadelphia Orchestra. A founding member of the clarinet-cello-piano trio Triad, and a former member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Bell received undergraduate degrees in performance and composition from the University of Michigan and continued with graduate performance studies at DePaul University in Chicago.

Mingjia Liu has served as principal oboe in the San Francisco Opera since 2010. Previous posts include principal oboe in the Kansas City Symphony and acting principal in the San Francisco Symphony. A native of Qingdao, China, he attended the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and later graduated from Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory of Music, pursuing further studies as a fellow at Aspen Music Festival and School. Liu has taught at Oberlin as well as in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Pre-College Division.
