The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has appointed ERIC NOWLIN to its Julie and Ed Levy Jr. Principal Viola Chair, effective with the 2016-17 season. As principal violist he will succeed JAMES VALKENBURG, who has served as acting principal since the 2013-14 season and will return to his role as assistant principal. The Julie and Ed Levy Jr. Chair was last held by ALEXANDER MISHNAEVSKI, who remains with the orchestra as principal emeritus. Nowlin is currently associate principal viola at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and violist in Canada’s New Orford String Quartet. He has performed with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the New York City-based Metropolis Ensemble, and CityMusic Cleveland as guest principal viola, and with the New York Philharmonic as a substitute violist. A prizewinner in the Naumburg, Irving Klein, and Hellam Young Artists competitions, he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School.
