“The maestro will stay put,’ writes Jen Mulson in Sunday’s (1/24) Colorado Springs Gazette. “The Colorado Springs Philharmonic recently announced that music director Josep Caballé-Domenech’s contract has been extended indefinitely. His original contract began in September 2011 and was scheduled to expire in August…. His new agreement comes at an auspicious time—the 2016-2017 season will mark the symphony’s 90th anniversary. To celebrate, the philharmonic commissioned six works based on Katharine Lee Bates’ ‘America the Beautiful’ by contemporary composers from across the country, including the Pikes Peak region. ‘They’ll be short works and fanfares to start each Masterworks program,’ said Nathan Newbrough, president and CEO of the philharmonic, ‘and to celebrate community and the important role of the orchestra in developing the community.’ Caballé-Domenech calls the upcoming season diverse, with both popular and less well-known pieces,” including Mahler’s Sixth Symphony and Schubert’s Ninth, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony. Said Newbrough, “We can move forward confidently knowing we have the visionary and artistic leader we need.”
