The New Haven Symphony Orchestra and Neighborhood Music School, a community school in New Haven, have launched an orchestral fellowship program for high school students. The program will provide selected members of the school’s Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra with learning and performances opportunities with the NHSO. Following auditions this month, eight students will receive full scholarships to participate in the youth orchestra, and will be automatically be enrolled in the NHSO Orchestral Fellowship Program. Fellows will receive free tickets to NHSO concerts, attend open rehearsals, participate in workshops with musicians and NHSO Music Director William Boughton, and perform at student showcases. They will be offered positions on the NHSO Junior Board, where they learn about orchestral management and get experience working at NHSO concerts and instrument discovery zones. In addition to the eight students receiving full scholarships, the orchestra also plans to allow youth orchestra members to apply for orchestral fellowships by submitting essays outlining why they would be good candidates for the program.
