“The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra has announced four finalists in its search for a successor to Artistic Director and Conductor Elizabeth Schulze, who is leaving after the 2016-17 season,” reads an unsigned article in Wednesday’s (2/3) Arizona Daily Sun. “Two have local connections—Daniel O’Bryant serves as director of orchestras at Northern Arizona University and Darko Butorac of Missoula, Mont., held that position from 2004 through 2008. The other two finalists are Charles Latshaw of Kent, Ohio, and Lidiya Yankovskaya of New York City. Each will spend a week in Flagstaff next season to rehearse and conduct a concert prior to the selection of a new music director in the spring. Schulze will conduct the opening and closing concerts of the season…. Before coming to NAU, O’Bryant was director of orchestras at St. Cloud State University and assistant conductor of the Salt Lake Opera Company. Butorac is music director of both the Tallahassee and Missoula Symphony Orchestras. Latshaw is director of the Kent State University Orchestra and the Kent/Blossom Music Festival. Yankovskaya currently serves as Artistic Director with Juventas New Music Ensemble, Music Director with Commonwealth Lyric Theater, and as a conductor with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.” Elizabeth Schulze remains music director at the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, based in Hagerstown.
