“[Yo-Yo Ma] will return to the Palace Theatre to perform the Elgar Cello Concerto with the [Albany Symphony Orchestra] under conductor and music director David Alan Miller as he marks his 25th season,” writes Amy Biancolli in Wednesday’s (2/10) Times Union (Albany, N.Y.). “The Dec. 8 concert with Ma is among the slate of 2016-17 concerts announced Wednesday by the Albany Symphony.… Among the pieces programmed for the upcoming season are six world premieres, including three concertinos by Michael Torke… and a work commissioned by George Tsontakis to recognize Miller’s silver anniversary with the ASO.… Aside from Ma, soloists will include pianists Ilya Rashkovskiy and Natasha Paremski, oboist Kathleen Needleman, violist Richard O’Neill and violinist Chee-Yun… More details … will be released in coming months. All programs will be led by Miller except for the Feb. 18 program, which is guest-conducted by Karina Canellakis, assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony.” Also programmed are Handel’s Water Music, Brahms’s Symphony No. 4, Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Corigliano’s Symphony No. 1 (“Of Rage and Remembrance”), and the world premiere of Reena Esmail’s Clarinet Concerto.
