“A tribute to rock icon David Bowie, Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No. 9’ and ‘Ode to Joy’ plus Cirque de la Symphonie, featuring aerialists and other circus performers, are among the highlights of the Florida Orchestra’s 2016-17 season,” states an unsigned article in Thursday’s (2/11) Tampa Tribune. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 will open the season under Music Director Michael Francis, who will lead music by Debussy, Ravel, Duruflé, and Jake Heggie’s The Work at Hand with mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton. Other notable repertoire includes Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 (“Jupiter”); Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1; Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”), which will feature the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. Guest soloists include pianist Jeremy Denk, violinist Augustin Hadelich, and guitarist Milos among others. Florida Orchestra Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Principal Oboe John Upton plays Mozart’s Oboe Concerto.
