“Hip-hop artist Gregory Jerome, known for his socially conscious rap style and dedication to using hip-hop for education, will deliver a groundbreaking performance during the Oklahoma City Philharmonic’s Black History Month edition of its Discovery Family Series” on February 21, reads an unsigned article in Sunday’s (2/14) Daily Oklahoman (Oklahoma City). Jerome “will perform an all-original new set of rhymes as the Philharmonic plays the second movement of Johannes Brahms’ German Requiem…. Jerome’s merging of classical and hip-hop … ‘is really a collaboration,’ Jerome said…. Jerome will be joined by DJ Mass as well as RACE Dance Company…. He said an enormous amount of work is being done to create a landmark presentation that will foster an appreciation of classical music for young hip-hop fans and vice versa. Jerome said he was approached by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic for this edition of the Discovery Family Series, which stages three concerts per year designed for children ages 4 to 13. The Black History Month edition focuses on the evolution of the African-American influence in American music.” Said Jerome of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, “As far as top musicians for collaboration, you cannot outdo it. It’s the cream of the crop.”
