Canada’s National Arts Centre, based in Ottawa and home to the National Arts Centre Orchestra, broke ground on February 9 for an upgrade project that is scheduled for completion in 2017, during Canada’s 150th-anniversary year. Among the planned renovations are an improved entrance on Confederation Square, new performance and public spaces, and greater accessibility. Donald Schmitt, of Toronto’s Diamond Schmitt Architects, will design the new public spaces. The National Arts Centre opened in 1969, and the grand opening of the “new” NAC will be July 1, 2017, on Canada Day. Throughout 2017, the city of Ottawa will be marking Canada’s 150th-anniversary year by adding community gardens, expanding the city’s cycling and recreation infrastructure, and adding arts and culture programs in the new Ottawa Art Gallery and redeveloped Arts Court.
