On March 1, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, and the Staatskapelle Berlin have invited recent refugees, their families, and aid volunteers to a free “Welcome Among Us” concert in Berlin’s Philharmonie concert hall. The concert, at 6 p.m. local Berlin time, will be streamed live beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The orchestras’ chief conductors—Daniel Barenboim, Iván Fischer, and Sir Simon Rattle—will lead a program that includes Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D minor (K. 466), Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major (“Classical”), and the second and fourth movements of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. A statement from Barenboim, Fischer, and Rattle reads: “Music is our international language which reaches and touches people everywhere. As musicians, we feel welcome all over the world. We hope that this also applies to people who are cruelly hit by fate and who are forced by war, famine or persecution, to leave their homes. With our joint concert, we want to wish refugee families welcome and express our thanks and appreciation to their helpers.” The concert is being held under the patronage of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel.
