Georgia’s LaGrange Symphony Orchestra reports that more than 2,000 third-grade students attended its annual children’s concerts on February 25 and 26. Each year since 1992, the LSO has given two free concerts in western Georgia and eastern Alabama. This year’s performances took place in LaGrange College’s Callaway Auditorium in Georgia and Langdale Auditorium in Valley, Alabama. The orchestra performed music by John Williams, Leroy Anderson, Edvard Grieg, and John Philip Sousa; introduced the instruments of the orchestra; and invited students to conduct the orchestra. “Contributing to arts education for elementary students is a worthwhile investment which generates returns that last a lifetime,” said Raylene Carter, the orchestra’s executive director. The LSO is parent organization of the LaGrange Youth Orchestra, and also runs an in-school music program that reaches an additional 3,600 students. The LaGrange Symphony Orchestra performs at LaGrange College, where it is orchestra in residence, under Music Director Richard Prior.
