“Ten years ago, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra was ready for a change, and so was its soon-to-be new conductor and music director, Timothy Muffitt,” writes Ken Glickman in Friday’s (3/4) Lansing State Journal (Michigan). Muffitt “showed he wasn’t shy about programming large, challenging works as well as more contemporary fare…. ‘We’ve been working on the foundation—both artistically and organizationally,’ said Muffitt. ‘We have recruited the finest players we can find (only about 50 percent of the orchestra was there when Muffitt arrived), and we now have financial stability.’ … [Says] Peter Whorf, WKAR-FM radio station manager … ‘I think the orchestra has grown tremendously under Tim.’ … Whorf liked his radio skills so much that he gave him his own show on Sunday night, playing and commenting his favorite music…. With an annual budget of just over $1 million, the LSO is the largest arts organization in Lansing. It has a full time staff of five [and] a robust schedule of classical concerts, pops concerts, concerts for children, a big band and a chamber music series.” The orchestra performs at the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
