The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, California has announced programming for its 2016 season from August 5 to 13. The season marks Marin Alsop’s 25th and final season as music director and will feature three world premieres: John Adams’s Spider Dance, commissioned by the musicians of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in honor of Marin Alsop; Anna Clyne’s symphonic ballet RIFT, with the Hysterica Dance Company; and an untitled work by Michael Kropf. Adams, Clyne, and Kropf also serve as composers-in-residence along with composers Mason Bates, John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon, Alexander Miller, Marlos Nobre, Kevin Puts, Christopher Rouse, and Gregory Smith. Festival performers will include vocalist Clarice Assad, violinist Justin Bruns, the Attacca String Quartet, The Choral Project, and conductor Alexandra Arrieche. As in prior years, the festival will encompass open rehearsals, pre-rehearsal talks, and the Conductors/Composers Workshop, a new-music professional training program.
