California’s Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra has announced its 2016-17 season, which will open on Oct. 16 with music director Nicholas McGegan leading an all-Beethoven program featuring Symphony No. 6 and Piano Concerto No. 3 with pianist/scholar Robert Levin as fortepiano soloist. Violinist Rachel Podger will perform concertos by Vivaldi, Tartini, and Bach; McGegan will lead Handel’s oratorio Joshua, and countertenor Iestyn Davis will sing arias by Handel, Zelenka, Hasse, Arne, C.P.E. Bach, and Gluck in a concert conducted by Jonathan Cohen. The season also includes performances of Haydn Symphony Nos. 63 and 91, and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. To close the season, McGegan will conduct a staged production of Rameau’s Le temple de la gloire in collaboration with director and choreographer Catherine Turocy, the New York Baroque Dance Company, and the Philharmonia Chorale. Le temple de la gloire, with a libretto by Voltaire, is a co-presentation with Berkeley-based Cal Performances. In February, McGegan celebrated his 30th anniversary as Philharmonia Baroque’s music director.
