Ohio’s Canton Symphony Orchestra is set to perform the world premiere of Béla Fleck’s second banjo concerto, with the composer as soloist, on March 19 at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall in Canton. Music Director Gerhardt Zimmermann will conduct the work (subtitled “Juno Concerto”) on a program also including Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. Fleck’s concerto is a co-commission by the Canton Symphony and the Colorado Symphony, which will perform it in April, and the South Carolina Philharmonic, where it is programmed for this November. Fleck’s first banjo concerto (subtitled “The Impostor”) was also co-commissioned and performed by multiple orchestras, including the Canton Symphony, in 2011.
