“The Dallas Opera has announced its second annual institute for women conductors, to be held November 26 to December 11, 2016. Application deadline is April 22,” writes Susan Elliott on Monday (3/21) at MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). “Six women, as well as four American ‘observers,’ will be chosen to participate in master classes and one-on-ones with the company’s Principal Guest Conductor Nicole Paiement and Italian conductor Carlo Montanaro, among others. Also involved are seminars on career advancement, and rehearsals with the Dallas Opera Orchestra and singers in the young artist programs. A second public performance has been added to last year’s single concert…. In his comments, [Dallas Opera] CEO Keith Cerny called the program ‘much needed’ and said it would ‘enable more women conductors to add their talents and insights to our collective understanding of this incredible art form.’ The company adds that participants may potentially be invited to serve as assistant conductors for the Dallas Opera.” A Dallas Opera press release states, “Although the emphasis is on women conductors on the cusp of major careers in opera, more seasoned applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis.”
