The Solti Foundation U.S. announced Wednesday that Karina Canellakis has been chosen as the 2016 recipient of its Sir George Solti Conducting Award. Given annually to a promising American conductor 38 years of age or younger, and also known as the Solti Fellow, the award includes a grant of $25,000, professional mentoring, and introductions to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Canellakis is currently completing her two-year tenure as assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She is scheduled for conducting debuts this summer with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the International Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the Mostly Mozart and Grand Teton music festivals. Her 2016-17 season will include debuts with the Swedish Radio Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Florida Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Jacksonville, Milwaukee, Toronto, and Vancouver symphony orchestras. Canellakis holds a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the Juilliard School and a bachelor’s in violin from the Curtis Institute of Music. Her previous awards include the 2015 Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award and the 2013 Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship.
