The University of Michigan is rolling out a new policy banning cell phones in its concert hall, and installing pay phones in all its venues. Located on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, UMS presents music, dance, and theater. The university will strictly enforce the policy by confiscating phones from audience members. Front of House Coordinator Willie Sullivan explains the new policy in a video released on April 1. The university cited recent “high-profile instances of confronting cell phones in the auditorium,” including actress Patti LuPone and a cell phone from a texting audience member, and New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert, in a performance disrupted by an iPhone “marimba” ring.
