“Elmar Oliveira, in conjunction with the Lynn Conservatory of Music, where he is on the faculty, has announced a new competition for violinists between the ages of 16 and 32,” reports Nicholas Beard in Musical America on March 31. “It is to be held every three years at Lynn and the first one is scheduled for January 22-February 5, 2017.” Lynn Conservatory is a part of Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. “Submissions are due September 30 of this year. Oliveira, who takes the title of founder and artistic director, indicated that the mission of the competition ‘is to nurture and develop talented young violinists, who are drawn from a truly global pool.’ In addition to cash prizes of $30,000, $15,000, and $10,000, Oliveira aims to provide ‘career-building tools—not solely financial ones.’ … After application screenings, 20 candidates will be invited to compete live in three rounds in Boca Raton, FL. The final concerts will take place February 4 and 5 … on Lynn’s campus. Guillermo Figueroa will lead found finalists in two concerts with the Lynn Philharmonia. Judges … include Andres Cardenes, Gudny Gudmundsdottir, Daniel Heifetz, Ilya Kaler, Vera Tsu Wein-ling, and Elmar Weingarden.”
