In Friday’s (4/1) Ottawa Citizen (Canada), Peter Robb reports that Canada’s National Arts Centre, home to the NAC Orchestra, “is celebrating the largest single donation it has ever received. The $1.5 million contribution to the NAC Foundation comes from Gail and David O’Brien and is being made in support of the NAC’s new strategic plan with its emphasis on new work and on a new department of indigenous theatre. … [Gail] O’Brien says the plan for a department of indigenous theatre is ‘transformational.’ … The other major initiative in the NAC’s current strategic plan is new work. Creation is expensive business, O’Brien says. The center has consulted with arts organizations across the country and the message is, she says, that these organizations need more resources, more expertise and more time to get Canadian creation onto international stages. The NAC is uniquely positioned to bring artistic leadership and production leadership to help bring some creations to a new level, she says. These can be NAC projects or collaborations with organizations across the country.” In addition to classical music, NAC presents English and French theater, dance, and community programs.
