“The California Symphony is reaching back into its own history to add some sparkle to its new season,” writes Sue Gilmore in Tuesday’s (4/5) East Bay Times (California). “All five programs in the Walnut Creek’s orchestra’s 30th anniversary season—its fourth under music director Donato Cabrera—will include a work by one of its former Young American Composers in Residence, each of whom has gone on to win major awards. Pulitzer-winner Kevin Puts’ ‘Network,’ written for the orchestra in his 1997 residency, opens the season at the Lesher Center for the Arts on Sept. 18. Kevin Beavers’ ‘Bright Sky’ anchors the Dec. 20-21 concerts; Christopher Theofanidis’ ‘Peace Love Light’ takes center stage on Jan. 22, 2017; Pierre Jalbert’s ‘Les espaces infinis’ is the March 19 highlight on an all-French program; and the May 7 season finale will feature the world premiere of current resident composer Dan Visconti’s ‘Tangle Eye,’ a concerto for cello and orchestra. Guest soloists appearing throughout the season include Romanian-Austrian pianist Maria Radutu, flutist Annie Wu, violinist Jennifer Cho and Israeli-American cellist Inbal Segev on the final program.”
