“The world premiere of a commissioned new work from Berkeley composer Paul Dresher will kick off the Berkeley Symphony’s 2016-17 season in Zellerbach Hall Oct. 13, on a program that also includes Stravinsky’s ‘Petrushka’ and soloist Philippe Quint playing Korngold’s Violin Concerto,” writes Sue Gilmore in Tuesday’s (4/12) San Jose Mercury News (California). The season “closes with a bang on May 4, 2017, with an evening-length performance of Shostakovich’s monumental Symphony No. 13 in B-flat minor, ‘Babi Yar,’ with bass Denis Sedov and a chorus amassed from several Bay Area ensembles,” which include the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus, the Pacific Boychoir Academy, and members of the St. John of San Francisco Russian Orthodox Chorale. “Joana Carneiro, now in her seventh season [as music director], will lead the orchestra in the … West Coast premiere of James MacMillan’s Symphony No. 4,” a co-commission with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, which performed the world premiere in August 2015. “Cellist Josh Roman [will perform] the Bay Area premiere of the concerto Mason Bates wrote for him; the orchestra will also play Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony on that program.”
