“A little more than two years after taking the position, Jed Bernstein is stepping down as the president of Lincoln Center,” writes Michael Cooper in Thursday’s (4/14) New York Times. “Mr. Bernstein, a former leader of the Broadway League and a producer of Broadway shows, wrote to colleagues, … ‘I have come to realize that the next step for me should be a return to direct engagement with what makes me happiest: creating and producing.’ … Mr. Bernstein’s departure—effective next week—leaves Lincoln Center without a leader just as it is trying to raise a daunting amount of money for its long-delayed renovation of David Geffen Hall, the home of the New York Philharmonic, which is expected to cost half a billion dollars. (Mr. Geffen donated $100 million—a gift Mr. Bernstein helped secure.) … Mr. Bernstein succeeded Reynold Levy, a prodigious fund-raiser, who stepped down after 11 years as Lincoln Center’s president…. ‘Lincoln Center is in a very strong position artistically, operationally and financially,’ [board chairwoman Katherine Farley] said in a statement, ‘and we are excited about the continuation of its world-class programming as well as the upcoming reimagining and renovation of David Geffen Hall.’ ” A search committee is seeking Bernstein’s successor.
