“The Louisville Orchestra announced their upcoming season of Classics and Coffee concerts Tuesday as well as a special concert with cellist Yo-Yo Ma,” writes Elizabeth Kramer in Tuesday’s (4/19) Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY). “The season includes a concert with Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony and artistic director of the New World Symphony Orchestra; world premieres by the orchestra’s music director and conductor Teddy Abrams; and Louisville debuts of Hans Abrahamsen’s University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award-winning work ‘Let Me Tell You,’ Nico Muhly’s ‘So To Speak (after Thomas Tallis)’ and a new co-commission by Lev Zhurbin. Also, the orchestra will perform Debussy’s ‘Jeux’ to a world-premiere short film with a baseball theme by filmmaker Dennis Scholl.” Also planned in 2016-17 are Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”) with the University of Louisville Choirs and vocal soloists; a Shakespeare-themed program in connection with a “citywide celebration of the tour of Shakespeare’s First Folio”; Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with soloists from the orchestra; Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 (“The Year 1905”); Britten’s Violin Concerto with soloist Augustin Hadelich; and Andrew Norman’s Split with pianist Andrew Hsu. Premieres by Music Director Teddy Abrams will include Muhammad Ali Portrait and Louisville Concerto II.
