In Friday’s (4/22) New Haven Register (CT), Joe Amarante previews the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s concert this Thursday, which “features intriguing participants and rich culture from Massachusetts to Mexico…. The stage will be filled with NHSO players, the Worcester Chorus, visiting chorus members of Coro Xopankuikatl of Mexico City and respected soprano Dana Fripp…. NHSO maestro William Boughton … will conduct the orchestra and chorus in the New Haven concert [and] Christopher Shepard, the Worcester Chorus conductor … will lead … a repeat performance … in Worcester April 29…. The Worcester Chorus will perform … [Bernstein’s] ‘Chichester Psalms,’ Constant Lambert’s ‘Rio Grande’ and … ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,’ ‘Go Down, Moses,’ and ‘Steal Away.’ … [Says Shepard], ‘Lambert was really inspired by Gershwin…. It is the closest piece in the choral repertoire to pieces like ‘Rhapsody in Blue.’ … Also on the program is [Vaughan Williams’s] ‘Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus.’ … The combined chorus will total about 120 voices…. Shepard will take part in an NHSO-hosted panel discussion … on the ‘marginalized’ American voices represented by the composers on the concert program and the influence of those voices on American music.”
