“The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s annual concert known as Classical Roots has sold out four days before the April 29 event,” writes Janelle Gelfand in Monday’s (4/25) Cincinnati Enquirer (Ohio). “Officials said on Monday that all 3,417 tickets in Music Hall have sold for Friday’s concert headlined by hip-hop artist Common. The acclaimed recording artist and actor, who won a 2015 Oscar and a 2016 Grammy for his song ‘Glory’ in the movie ‘Selma,’ will perform the song that he wrote for the Civil Rights film with John Legend. Classical Roots celebrates African-American music traditions, including classical repertoire, as well as traditional and contemporary African-American spiritual and gospel music. The concert features the Classical Roots Community Mass Choir, which is comprised of more than 100 singers from African-American churches across the Greater Cincinnati region. Also on the program are R&B singer Capathia Jenkins, as well as the CSYO Nouveau Chamber Players, consisting of talented African-American student musicians. Pops conductor John Morris Russell leads the orchestra. This year’s Classical Roots will be dedicated to Cincinnati’s Marian Spencer, a tireless advocate for civil rights.”
