On Tuesday (4/26), Peter Rubardt, music director of the Pensacola Symphony, was interviewed on WUWF (National Public Radio in northwest Florida) discussing the orchestra’s final concert of this season, to take place on April 30. On the program: Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with soloist Jennifer Frautschi, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Rubardt: “I did the Bruch concerto with Jennifer Frautschi last year and the moment I heard her start to play it I thought, ‘I have got to bring her to Pensacola for this piece.’ … I’ve always been so fascinated by Shostakovich, he occupies such a mammoth position in the 20th-century symphonic world. He wrote his first symphony when he was nineteen and, to this day, it is one of the most brilliant pieces of the 20th century.… I don’t know any music that is as harrowing as the second movement of the Tenth Symphony.… Shostakovich 10 does not come along every day, but it’s such a gratifying piece to work on and it’s such a thrilling piece to listen to. This has been a really great season with a lot of big pieces. But all season long I think we have been aiming towards this as the grand finale.”
