Connecticut’s Hartford Symphony Orchestra will open its 2016-17 season at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in October with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol and Scheherazade, led by Music Director Carolyn Kuan. Highlights of the orchestra’s nine Masterworks programs include Steven Mackey’s Four Iconoclastic Episodes, with the composer on electric guitar; Avner Dorman’s Spices, Perfumes, Toxins!; Mason Bates’s Liquid Interface; and Ingram Marshall’s Kingdom Come, written in the 1990s in memory of the composer’s brother-in-law, who was killed while working as a journalist in Bosnia. The orchestra will perform Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan, Liszt’s A Faust Symphony, and symphonies by Brahms, Mozart, Schubert, and Tchaikovsky. The season will conclude in June with HSO Assistant Conductor Adam Kerry Boyles leading Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra, with the Hartford Chorale.
