The Spokane Symphony and the Spokane Tribe of Indians will perform a free concert on May 13 at Antoine Andrews Memorial Hall on the Spokane Tribal Pow-Wow Grounds in Wellpinit, Washington. The program will include a student play, Goat Moccasins, narrated in Salish with students singing in Salish. (The Spokane Tribe are part of the Interior Salish Group in northeast Washington, northern Montana, and western Idaho.) The orchestra will perform the Overture to Mozart’s The Magic Flute and excerpts from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6. The evening will also include Tribal drumming and dancing. On May 10 at 10am PT on Spokane radio station KSFC, Spokane Symphony Music Director Eckart Preu and Salish language teacher Felicia Pichette will discuss the collaboration with host Tara Gatewood. The May 13 concert is the culmination of the Spokane Symphony’s two-year pilot program “Music Heals” in collaboration with the Spokane Tribe’s culture department, tribal teachers, and the Wellpinit School District, funded in part by the League of American Orchestras through a Getty Education and Community Investment Grant.
