On May 13, Colorado’s Arapahoe Philharmonic will perform the world premiere of Edgar Girtain’s Symphony No. 2 (“An American Pastoral”), led by Music Director Devin Patrick Hughes. As winner of the orchestra’s first Vincent LaGuardia, Jr. Composition Competition in 2014, Girtain became the orchestra’s first composer in residence in 2014-15 and 2015-16. Girtain’s symphony is performed in two connected movements, the first a depiction of the American West, the second based on Thomas Campbell’s poem “The River of Life.” Also on the program will be Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4. The Vincent LaGuardia, Jr. Composition Competition is named for the Arapahoe Philharmonic’s former music director, the late Vincent C. LaGuardia, Jr.
