The Pittsburgh Symphony “embarks on a 14-concert tour of some of the great halls in Europe on Tuesday, its first international jaunt since 2013,” writes Elizabrth Bloom in Friday’s (5/13) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “And at one of those august venues—the Berlin Philharmonie—the orchestra’s concert will be broadcast live to Heinz Hall. ‘We want Pittsburghers to see what we’re doing abroad and how we’re representing our community and the pride in that, kind of like when the [Pittsburgh] Penguins are playing an away game,’ said president and CEO Melia Tourangeau, who is joining the PSO on tour for the first time since assuming her post last summer. Touring is an especially shiny jewel in the PSO’s crown, and the orchestra prides itself on representing Pittsburgh abroad. The Berlin simulcast allows the symphony to share with the home crowd a critical part of its identity that normally is unavailable to even the most devout fans. … The tour brings the orchestra to 11 locations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium, concluding with two concerts in Munich on June 3 and 4. One highlight is a three-concert residency at the Musikverein in Vienna, the orchestra’s second multi-concert stint at that hall.” Music Director Manfred Honeck leads the orchestra throughout the tour.
