The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has appointed EMIL J. KANG special assistant to the chancellor for the arts, effective July 1, 2016. He is currently executive and artistic director of UNC-Chapel Hill’s Carolina Performing Arts, which he founded in 2005. Kang had previously worked at the Seattle Symphony, serving as orchestra manager, and at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, where he joined the staff as vice president for operations and was promoted to president and executive director. A 1996 alumnus of the League of American Orchestras’ Orchestra Management Fellowship Program, Kang holds a degree in economics from the University of Rochester (N.Y.) and completed the Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management program at Harvard University.
