Seven composers have been chosen to participate in the Minnesota Orchestra’s Composers Institute from January 30 to February 3, 2017, under Kevin Puts, in his third year directing the institute. They are Katherine Balch, Michael Boyman, Judy Bozone, Michael-Thomas Foumai, Tonia Ko, Phil Taylor, and Conrad Winslow. The seven will participate in rehearsals, seminars, and mentoring sessions, and the institute will conclude with a public “Future Classics” performance of their works by the Minnesota Orchestra, led by Music Director Osmo Vänskä. In announcing the seven candidates, chosen from a pool of 212 composers who applied, Puts said, “The competition was fierce this year, with a record-breaking number of applicants who members of the adjudication panel described as ‘an embarrassment of riches and a testament to the potential of this generation of composers.”
