The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will perform commissioned world premieres on two programs at Roy Thomson Hall in June. Peter Oundjian will lead Jordan Pal’s City in Colour during the TSO’s June 15 and 16 concerts, which also include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”) and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, with soloist Yefim Bronfman. Pal is in the midst of a two-year residency as the TSO’s RBC Affiliate Composer. On June 17, the TSO will premiere Concerto for Violin, Rock Band, and String Orchestra by Mike Mills, a founding member of the band R.E.M. The concerto, a co-commission with the Aspen Music Festival and Chicago’s Harris Theater, will also feature Robert McDuffie, for whom the violin part was written. Before the June 17 concert, the Massey Hall Band will perform cover arrangements of R.E.M. songs on the patio of Roy Thomson Hall; there will also be a post-concert party in the lobby, with cabaret performances, as part of Pride Toronto celebrations during the month of June.
